Trouble getting started with username--want to cha

While trying to sign-up for this site...I kept having repeated problems/trouble with my username. I tried merrimac gunner....merrimac gunship....hornests nest 1862 etc.....NOthing was allowed. Sssoooo, I just typed in 1954 and it worked--even though--I didn't want 1954...I just typed it in..."hoping"...to change it at a later time. I desired a diff-username but was not allowed. Is there something I could do to change it to what I really Desire-??-modify profile-didn't help-can't change username- -any help would be appreciated-Thanks!!

Which user name would you like? I will be happy to change it for you. For user names, you may only use alphanumeric characters (A-Z and 0-9) in your username. No underscores.
